How many books have you purchased on personal development?
Many of these books contain strategies and techniques for taking control of your mind your finances and your health and some of them do work but few talk about the importance of letting go. What do I mean by letting go? Letting go is the art of release. Releasing yourself from your worries your fears and all of the pressures of everyday life – letting yourself just be and seeing where your inner journey takes you. It’s a little like meditation and is an art form.
Why an art form?
Because it’s bloody difficult to do and can take some time to feel the benefits. It also requires the patience to let yourself be alone. What is the experience being in a let go? You may feel nicely relaxed but I am not just talking about feelings of relaxation here; I’m talking about the feeling of floating along inside yourself – a deeply peaceful yet aware state where all mind chatter has ceased and you come close to knowing who you really are what your inner state of being is really all about. I have had subtle glimpses of this state and believe me once you’ve experienced it you will want to many times again.
So now the how to part! How do you master the art of letting go?
First you must…
1. Bring awareness to whatever is that you’re doing – in other words do it with as much awareness as possible. The more you practice this the more acutely aware you will become of your bodies own innate intelligence and when it’s telling you to let go.
2. When you feel resistance just focus on it and get curious about it but without judging or analysing it. You let it be ok and just witness the whole thing. Where does the feeling move how does it feel? Sticky numb sharp etc. Move into the feeling and let it become part of you.
3. Find a place to relax. Lying down on your belly is what I find works best for me. If you are unable to find a place to let yourself relax fully don’t worry it will no doubt return. When you’re lying down or in a fully relaxed state of being become aware of the pulse inside. Bring as much awareness to your bodies sensations as possible; the beating of your heart your skin temperature the softness of the sheets on your skin. Once you feel attuned to your internal rhythms just let all your awareness sink into them. Also become aware of the outer sounds that surround you. Whatever thoughts arise no matter how disturbing or beautiful just witness them without judgement and watch them pass. Let your entire being just sink into the internal and external experience.
What you may experience when letting go.
- You may notice slight jolts of the body.
- You may feel like you don’t want to let go
- You may get really impatient with the whole thing. If so some physical exercise or other release work may be necessary for you to be able to master the art of letting go. Dance and EFT have worked for me as well as just walking.
How long to remain in this state?
Well that’s really up to you. Sometimes five to ten minutes is enough; at other times you may want to go much longer. It depends on you and how much time you’ve got in the first place.
Barriers to letting go.
- Eating an unhealthy diet full of refined sugar starch and cooked fats and meat products.
- Overanalysing the contents of your mind or what’s happening.
What I’ve just mentioned is really the art of letting go and once you become familiar with the internal signals you will come closer to the cosmic flow within. This is the best way to conserve your energy and experience deeper levels of relaxation.
